William Monroe’s football team’s halftime team lead slowly slipped away Friday night against Warren County, with the Wildcats taking the lead for the first time with 1:54 to play before holding on for a 14-13 victory that pushed Monroe to 0-6.

Monroe led 13-0 at the break despite losing quarterback Malique Shackleford to an injury that pressed Tyler Trevillian into duty at quarterback. Trevillian threw a touchdown pass to Khalil Green in the first half, part of a big night for Green who also picked off a pair of passes.

Julius Bates had the other first half touchdown for the Dragons while Malik Mallory carried the load offensively with 154 yards on 27 carries. Greg Sizemore also chipped in with 73 carries.

Robert Rutherford got Warren going in the second half with a touchdown pass late in the third quarter that cut the Monroe lead to 13-7 and he struck again with a 32-yard touchdown pass with 1:54 to play that pushed Warren ahead 14-13. Monroe got a chance to rally, but Rutherford picked off a pass on the final play on Warren’s own five yardline to seal the victory.

Monroe lost despite out-gaining the Wildcats 412 to 222 on the night.

The Dragons will try and end the squad’s six-game skid Friday night in their annual border war rivalry clash with Madison County at 7:30 p.m.
