William Monroe holds off late Louisa charge

Sure, it’s a cliché, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t true.

It really is tough to beat a team three times in one season.

Just ask William Monroe, they lived it Saturday night at home against Louisa County in the Jefferson District quarterfinals.

With 2:30 left in regulation, Monroe watched as the Lions’ full court pressure sliced into the Dragons’ 14-point lead, quickly cutting it to six points.

After a timeout, Phillip Lamb’s Dragons were the picture of composure as they shot their way to a 60-51 victory via the charity stripe. The Dragons went 21-36 from the line on the night.

Louisa’s Raven Robinson’s sharp-shooting kept the Lions in the contest late, knocking down several shots from distance. William Monroe’s defensive focus on Louisa’s standout freshman Javanique Burruss held her to only seven points, while Robinson tallied 18 in the contest.

Sophomore floor general Alex Cave led the way for the Dragons with 18 points while Katelyn Roach shot her way to 14. Alexa Smith provided consistent post presence for William Monroe and chipped in 10 points of her own.

William Monroe will advance and take on top seeded Fluvanna Tuesday night at Monticello High School.
