William Monroe golf wins Conference 28 title

Once again, William Monroe’s golf squad is back on top in Conference 28.

The Dragons outpaced second place Loudoun Valley by 11 strokes Monday to wrap up the Conference 28 title at their home course at Greene Hills in Stanardsville.

Monroe won the inaugural Conference 28 title back in 2013, also outpacing Loudoun Valley. The win moves the Dragons on to the Region 3A East championships.

Logan Yates led the way with a scorching 67 that earned him the individual conference championship. He beat Rock Ridge High’s Brandon Yoon by two strokes.

The other three scorers for the Dragons scored in a tight pack, taking sixth, seventh and eighth individually. Yancey Harrison and Jared Shifflett each carded 77s while Austin Crenshaw put together a round of 78 to bolster Monroe’s effort and secure the win.

Loudoun Valley’s Brandon Weaver led the Vikings with a 70.

The Dragons and Loudoun Valley will both compete in the Region 3A East tournament next week.
