William Monroe football falls to Mason on the road

UVA Primary Care Madison

A rash of turnovers, a stalled offense and a big dose of D’montae Noble for George Mason conspired to hand William Monroe its fourth straight loss to open the season as the Dragons fell 23-14 Friday night on the road.

Monroe lost four fumbles against George Mason and had a Khalil Green kick return for a touchdown called back on a penalty on a mistake-filled night.

Noble also got loose for the Mustangs in a big way with 171 yards and two touchdowns on 25 carries. Dustin Green also chipped in with 85 yards and a score on 14 carries.

But despite those errors, Monroe was in the game for most of the evening, trailing just 13-6 at the break. A three and out to open the third quarter led to a Mason score that turned that into a 20-6 advantage. Monroe couldn’t ever find a counterpunch, finally scoring in the closing minutes after the Mustangs tacked on a field goal with 2:41 to play.

Malique Shackleford scored once on the ground and another through the air to Nick Hayes in the first half. He finished with 12 carries for 42 yards while going 8 for 15 through the air for 66 yards. Tyler Trevillian managed 66 total yards of offense with 36 on the ground and 30 through the air on four catches.

Monroe will try and get things headed in the right direction next week when the Dragons host Clarke County at 7:30 p.m.
