William Monroe falls just short in comeback effort against Fort Defiance

William Monroe kept clawing and fighting Friday night against Fort Defiance.

After falling into a 14-0 hole, Monroe got back into the game, and by the end of the third third quarter, the Dragons led. But a costly pick six and another interception late snuffed out hopes of a comeback as Fort Defiance beat William Monroe 35-28.

Monroe’s Jackson Ward kicked a field goal with 42 seconds to play and the Dragons recovered the ensuing onsides kick for a shot at the game-tying touchdown. But on fourth down, the Indians picked off the pass to ice the game.

William Monroe quarterback Alex Kinsey finished with 219 yards and three touchdowns through the air to go with 50 yards on the ground. His favorite target on the night was Jordan Gray who had 85 yards and a touchdown on six catches. JaeKwon Wayne had 52 yards and a touchdown on three catches while Trenton Fisher caught the other touchdown and James Collins had a 54-yard catch.

Cameron Hayes finished with 43 yards and a rushing touchdown on eight touches. The Dragons outgained Fort Defiance as a team 339 yards to 317.

Cole Sligh led Fort Defiance with 158 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries.

William Monroe (0-3) heads to Broadway Friday night looking for its first win of the year.
