Willcutts, Simmons, Mayo and Clay compete at New Balance nationals

Three local runners made their way to New Balance Nationals and competed Friday and Saturday. All three put in solid efforts, with Western Albemarle’s Gannon Willcutts leading the way.

 

Willcutts finished sixth in the New Balance Nationals’ 5000-meter championships, clocking in at 14:48.78, just 12 seconds behind Rhode Island’s David Principe’s title-winning pace.

 

Also on Friday, Orange County’s Dequane Simmons took fifth in the 400-meter’s Emerging Elite race, finishing in 48.71

 

Saturday, Western Albemarle’s Zoe Clay took 14th in the 2-mile run’s Emerging Elite race. She finished in 11:15.54.

 

The New Balance Nationals, held in Greensboro at North Carolina A&T, features high school runners from across the country.
