Western Albemarle’s football team has been able to lean increasingly on a staunch defense of late.

But just so we’re clear, the Warriors’ offense can still carry Western Albemarle to a win.

The Warriors proved it once again Thursday night in a 59-31 victory over Powhatan at home, exploding for 574 yards of total offense.

Sam Hearn spearheaded the attack with a whale of a statistical night, completing 18 of 26 passes for 372 yards and five touchdowns. He also ran for 115 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.

Derek Domecq was Hearn’s top target on the night, with six catches for 154 yards and two touchdowns. Michael Vale and Henry Kreienbaum also had big receiving nights, with Vale hauling in 91 yards and a score on five catches. Kreienbaum went for 89 yards and a score including a 56-yard touchdown in the third quarter.

Oliver Herndon had 57 yards and two touchdowns at tailback, and threw in a receiving touchdown for good measure. Osiris Crutchfield and Darren Klein each finish with 5.5 tackles, with Crutchfield picking up a sack and two tackles for a loss.

Western jumped out to a 21-0 lead, but Justin Deleon helped reel Western back in, closing the gap to 28-21 with a 73-yard sprint midway through the second quarter. He finished with 179 yards on 12 carries. The Warriors kicked it back into gear though from there, scoring 28 unanswered points to grab a 56-21 lead midway through the third quarter.

Powhatan closed the gap after that but, the margin was too large and the Warriors moved to 4-1 on the season and set up a clash at home with Orange County Friday as the Jefferson District’s only two remaining unbeaten squads lock up. Powhatan will square off with Louisa as the Indians continue to look for their first district win.
