Western boys lock up Madison to pick up win

Western Albemarle’s defense has been strong all year, but Monday night it managed to completely clamp down on a Madison County squad playing without standout Kobi Alexander to the tune of a 65-13 win over the Mountaineers.

The Warriors held Madison scoreless in the second half with some help from a running clock and a Madison offense that got into a funk it couldn’t break.

It was a big-time bounce back win for Western that fell at the hands of Albemarle in the closing seconds on Friday. The Warriors got 13 points and four assists from Charlie Weyher in the win while Garrett Payne scored 12 points. The Warriors scored just eight points in the fourth quarter, but nine different players managed to score, with Chris McGahren scored nine, Gabe Nafzinger scored eight and Tommy Mangrum scored seven. Daniel Brown chipped in six points.

Elijah Lewis had eight of Madison’s 13 points.

Madison, who is still in the running for at least a share of the Bull Run District title will try and get back on track against Strasburg Wednesday while Western hosts Fluvanna County tonight.
