Western boys lacrosse blows past Monticello

Western Albemarle’s boys lacrosse team isn’t taking anything for granted and it showed in fast, efficient start in a 19-4 victory over Monticello.

“We came out and said that this is a game where we really want to execute well and play at a high level,” said Western coach Alex Whitten. “We wanted to come out and play hard, Monticello is a tough group of kids, they play hard. We wanted to out execute them.”

The Warriors built a 6-0 lead in the first quarter and kept the pedal down from there for the most part in an explosive offensive performance.

Western longstick midfielder Oliver Herndon led the Warriors with five goals, with a couple coming on fastbreaks while others came within the set offense where he’s emerged as a tremendous weapon on that end of the field. John Haden and James Buetow both each had explosive nights too with four goals each while Luke Reilly finished with two goals. Jack Loffredo and Jarett Smith each finished with a goal.

Western keeper Jackson Sours notched six saves on the night.

Brian Young finished with two goals for the Mustangs while Mitchell Plantz and Cole Vincel each had one. Tony Talbert had a team-high six ground balls for Monticello.

Western will travel to take on Powhatan Tuesday at 6 p.m. while the Mustangs travel to Charlottesville for a key Jefferson District clash.
