Hearn powers Western baseball past Fort Defiance

Western Albemarle’s baseball team kept its season alive Monday night with a 2-0 win over Fort Defiance in a Region 3A West first round game, leaning on a strong night on the mound by Sam Hearn to knock off the Indians.

Hearn surrendered a pair of hits back-to-back in the first inning but was lights out after that, locking down Fort Defiance with nine strikeouts and just one walk.

Western picked up the game-winning run in the fourth inning when a pair of errors and a hit by Hearn put the Warriors up 1-0. In the seventh, Derek Domecq added an insurance run with an RBI double with two outs. Hearn then closed the door in the seventh for the victory.

Hearn finished the night 3-for-3 at the plate while Sam James went 2-for-3.

The Warriors advance to the region quarterfinals where they’ll face Rustburg Tuesday night.
