Ward ignites STAB football in win over Randolph Macon

St. Anne’s-Belfield’s Myles Ward was pretty obviously the Saints’ most dangerous big play option coming into this season.

But even with that label coming in, his performance Saturday in the Saints’ 66-26 win over Randolph Macon Academy was off the charts.

Ward took not one, but two kickoffs back for touchdowns in the third quarter, streaking in from 75 and then 73 yards. He’d also already caught a pair of first half touchdown passes, one from 55 yards out with just 15 seconds left in the first half as STAB built a 33-14 lead before the break.

That’s 223 all-purpose yards on just four touches with all four going for scores, the very definition of a big play threat.

STAB’s quarterback Chase Emmert had a similarly efficient day, going 6-for-10 for 152 yards and three touchdowns through the air while rushing for two touchdowns on just five carries.

Amani Woods gave the Saints a jolt on the ground, rushing for 135 yards and a touchdown on 16 touches. Fullback Joe Ambrosi and freshman Gabe Decker also scored on the ground. Doug Brooks and Will Edelson had sacks for the Saints.

Through two games, the Saints have won a defensive struggle with Hargrave and a veritable track meet with Randolph Macon. Winning two completely different ways bodes well for a team that had a lot of question marks coming into the season. They’ll get a chance to continue answering those questions Friday when the Saints play their first 8-man game of the year at home against Greenbrier Christian at 7 p.m.
