Volleyball/field hockey roundup: Gritty Orange volleyball squad falls to Louisa

Orange County volleyball player Jessika Morris certainly gets the gut-it-out award of the week after her performance Thursday night. But teammate Emma Chronister isn’t far behind in the running.

Trailing 13-11 during the fourth game of the Hornets’ match against Louisa County Friday night, which finished as a 3-1 Louisa victory, Chronister and Morris collided. When the teammates ran into each other, one of Morris’ front teeth smashed into Chronister’s head, leaving a gash and blood on the floor while Morris was left with a tooth bent way back into her mouth. Chronister quickly got the wound taken care of and stayed in the game, while Morris indicated that she couldn’t get back in to coach Angela Forth.

Forth put in a sub for Morris, the Hornets’ libero while Morris sat out and Chronister stayed in. But seconds later, Morris wanted back in, and re-entered, damaged tooth and all, though the Hornets eventually fell short.

Morris finished with 10 digs while Chronister posted an 11-kill, three-dig night. Maria Kotulka had 24 assists to key the offense. Mary Beth Britten had nine digs and five kills while Rachel Donaldson had a strong all around night with a pair of blocks, four digs and 10 kills.
