Volleyball roundup: Monticello sweeps Monroe, Albemarle moves to 7-0 in district

Monticello seems intent on separating itself as top challenger to Fluvanna County and Western’s supremacy in the Jefferson District.

The Mustangs made a big statement to that effect by sweeping William Monroe 25-23, 25-19, 25-19. Eenior Christine Archer and Kate Geldmacher paced Monticello with 12 and eight kills respectively. Gelmacher also had nine aces while senior setter Amanda Powell keyed the offense with 23 assists. Erica Watson and Sidney Walker had eight digs each.

Albemarle stays unbeaten in Commonwealth

Even without an injured Megan Napolitano, Albemarle managed to knock remain unscathed in Commonwealth District play by edging out Mountain View 3-2.

Albemarle won the first two games 25-20 amd 25-21, but dropped the next two 25-20, 25-20 before rallying to win 15-10 in game five.

Hannah Lawson carried the load with 24 kills while Stephanie Strauss came up with nine kills to compliment Lawson’s monster effort. Sarah Terlesky had 11 service points and four aces while Meg Carpenter had 15 service points and 12 digs. Abby Hendrix had 33 assists to trigger the offense.

The Patriots move to 9-2 and 7-0 in district.
