Volleyball roundup: Monticello, Louisa and Western all pick up victories

After losing for the first time in three weeks to Fluvanna County on Thursday, Monticello was looking to string together a few more wins before the Jefferson District tournament begins in two weeks. On the road against Goochland, the Mustangs got back their winning ways by taking down Goochland 3-1, 25-17, 17-25, 25-17, 25-16.

Senior libero Erica Watson led the Monticello defense with her 10 dig performance. Junior Amy Skolnick had a season high nine kills on offense to go along with Kate Geldmacher’s 11. Mustangs’ senior setter, Amanda Powell, piled up 33 assists on the night.

With William Monroe falling to Fluvanna County, Monticello (11-5, 7-3) now holds third place in the district by two games. The Mustangs will host Western Albemarle on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Louisa tops Orange

Louisa County got back to .500 in the district after succesfully defending their home court against Orange County. The Lions moved past the Hornets in four hard fought games, 3-1, 25-17, 25-19, 23-25, 25-20.

For Orange, Emma Chronister tallied 11 digs and eight kills. Rachel Donaldson put up another double-double with her 15-kill 13-dig evening while teammate Maria Kotulka contributed 23 assists.

The Hornets (7-9, 2-8) will host William Monroe on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

The Lions (9-7, 5-5) travel to Charlottesville at the same time.

Warriors roll over Black Knights

Western Albemarle inched one step closer to another perfect regular season in the Jefferson District after beating Charlottesville 3-0, 25-14, 25-13, 25-20.

The Warriors took care of business at the service line with Riley Martin and Brittney Wagner each putting forth five aces and worked with mostly underclassmen as they rested their seniors.  Frehsman Allie Nicholson and teammate Brittney Wagner each had four kills. Katie Rossberg, a sophomore, finished the match with three kills.

Charlottesville (2-14, 0-10) will host Louisa County on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

Western (15-1, 9-0) will travel to third place Monticello also on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
