Despite Monticello’s volleyball team reversing a two-game skid with a tremendous game four effort to force a game five, Powhatan found a way to snag the victory Monday night with a game fine win that sealed the match 3-2 at MHS.

Powhatan fell 26-24 in game one to the Mustangs, then ripped off too relatively easy wins 25-18 and 25-17. That’s when the Mustangs woke up and won 25-21 before falling in game five 15-7.

Julia Goodman and Kellie Nee kicked the Powhatan offense into gear with Goodman blasting 17 kills while also managing four blocks. Nee had 45 assists and six kills from her spot at setter. Abby Nee notched a 22-dig, 11-kill, four-block night for the Indians.

The Mustangs got a huge night from Katie Devine, who rang up 20 kills in her best effort this season for the Mustangs. Amaya Gibson was extremely active defensively with 46 digs. Allie Perez finished with 31 assists with the vast majority going to Devine. Gibson, Perez and Brock finished with three aces apiece.

Monticello (3-4) will host Orange County Wednesday night while Powhatan (5-1) takes on Fluvanna in Powhatan.

Albemarle coasts past Charlottesville

Albemarle’s volleyball team has had to be road warriors so far this season, but the Patriots got a chance to play just their second home regular season game Monday night against Charlottesville and they didn’t waste the opportunity, rolling 3-0 over the Black Knights.

The Patriots rolled 25-6, 25-12 and 25-13 over Charlottesville.

The Patriots’ balanced attack at the net led the way as Stephanie Lugus, Katie Schnell and Gabbi DeGenarro each had six kills. Ellie Benning set a number of those up with 16 assists on the night. Katie Smith had nine service points and Cindy Yu finished with eight. Sarah Hanssen had a big night at the service line with three aces and Madison Warlick finished with six digs.

The win runs Albemarle’s record to 10-0 on the year and sets up a huge cross-county rivalry game in Crozet Wednesday against Western Albemarle at 7 p.m.
