VHSL wrestling first round update

First Round results at VHSL state championships are coming in and here are how the local qualifiers have fared. 

 

Group 5A

Orange County’s Corey Champion picked up a tech fall win over Glen Allen’s Austin Farr to advance to the state semifinals. Champion will take on Hickory’s Anthony Amendolare in the semifinals tonight.

 

At 195 pounds, Orange’s Dustin Shifflett fell to Sean Yochum on a disqualification.

 

Albemarle’s Nikolas Swoopes fell to Eric Gamboni on a pin at 182 pounds in the opening round.

 

Group 4A

 

Louisa’s Jeffrey Sisk is off to a fast start in Salem as the 126-pounder who sports a 50-1 record this year picked up a quick pin of Zach Singhas in the first round. He’ll take on Mike Duffy of Sherando in the semifinals tonight.

 

The Lions’ Jaret Grimsley fell by pin to Handley’s Lio Quezada at 132 pounds while Austin Mills lost by a 5-1 decision at 120 pounds.

 

Zepf Frankart lost to Fauquier’s Kyle Budd in the first round on a pin. Grimsley, Mills and Frankart will all look to wrestle back in the consolation bracket.

 

Group 3A

 

Western Albemarle’s Russ Hill wins a major decision 13-3 at 145 pounds over Connor Jost of Warren County. He’ll face Austin Wilkerson of Brooksville in the semifinals this evening. Wilkerson edged Hill in overtime in the Region 3A West final.

 

Western’s Nate Reilly fell to Warren County’s Jacob Schneider, pushing him into the consolation bracket.

 

Monticello’s Logan Zimmerman fell 16-13 in his first round match to Anthony Lattanze of Brentsville District. He’ll look to wrestle back in the consolation matches.

 

William Monroe’s Greg Sizemore fell by pin to Cave Spring’s Cody Amos in the opening round.

 

Group 2A

 

Madison County’s Zach Gibson rolled to a 14-7 decision win over Ben Humphrey of the Richlands in the opening round. He’ll face Will Rowan of Union in the semifinals later tonight.

 

Jalyn Simms also advanced to the semifinals with a third-period pin of Christophe Nichols in the opening round. Simms will face Grundy’s Maverick Coleman in the semifinals who advanced when O’Shea Sanders was disqualified.

 

The Mounataineers’ Gabe Farmer fell in the first round to Grundy’s Elliott Pedigo on a pin at 170 pounds. Dalton Dudley fell by major decision at 152 pounds to William Lawrence of Gate City 13-4.

 

Madison’s Joseph Manuel fell to Leonard Marshall by pin in the first round at 220 pounds. The Mountaineers’ Eric Cashman lost to Grundy’s Michael McGowan in the opening round by a narrow 4-3 decision.
