VHSL releases final 2016 Wells Fargo Cup Standings, Albemarle, Western finish in state’s top three

The VHSL released its final 2016 Wells Fargo Cup standings, and two local programs finished in the top three in their group, with Albemarle taking third place in Group 5A while Western finished as the state runner-up in Group 3A. The Wells Fargo Cup measures athletic success across an entire department’s programs. The last local champion was Western Albemarle in 2008.

Albemarle finished third behind champion Hickory and runner-up Princess Anne. The Patriots had the second highest spring total points in the state behind Hickory, with 145 points. The Patriots’ boys soccer state championship, as well as state final four runs by girls soccer and girls lacrosse contributed to that strong finish. The Patriots scored 45 points in fall and then 137.5 in winter highlighted by the boys basketball squad’s state final four run.

Western Albemarle finished second in the Group 3A standings behind Blacksburg, finishing 30.5 points off the title winning pace set by the Bruins. Western was solid across the whole year, with 122.5 points in fall, 182.5 in winter and 182.5 in spring. State championships by boys cross country, boys and girls diving and boys soccer powered that across the board performance.

William Monroe finished 18th in Group 3A with all 95 points for the Dragons coming in the spring while Monticello took 26th place in the standings with 60 points coming from the fall while 15 came from the winter sports. Fluvanna finished 38th overall.

Goochland finished 16th in the Group 2A standings, closing with a huge spring as the Bulldogs finished with 82.5 points in spring, tied for sixth in the state during that season. Madison County finished 37th while Nelson County took 41st in the Group 2A standings.
