Thompson field goal lifts Woodberry past St. Christopher’s

A year ago, Woodberry Forest poured it on early against St. Christopher’s and picked up a 21-point win over one of their Prep League rivals.

This one was a dogfight.

The Tigers needed a last-second, 27-yard field goal from Wills Thompson to pull off a 31-28 win on the road to open up league play and snag Woodberry’s first win of the season. The Saints and Tigers were deadlocked at 14-14 at the break.

Ben Locklear exploded for three touchdowns and ran for another, finding Dequece Carter for two of those scores and Kyle Bilodeau for another.

The Tigers jumped out 14-0 before St. Christopher’s responded with scores from Patrick Roustis on the ground and through the air to Will Hayes. Woodberry took a 21-14 lead midway through the third quarter but St. Christopher’s answered again, tying the game at 21-21 and then again at 28-28.

That set the stage for Thompson, who’d been a perfect 4-for-4 on point after attempts before the field goal try, to lift the Tigers.

Caleb Hodges led Woodberry’s defensive effort with 7.5 tackles, six of them solo, while John Harris had a sack while Bilodeau, Logan Bowers, Davis Sherwood and David Smith each notched tackles for a loss.

The Tigers will face Landon at home Saturday at 2 p.m.
