Miller baseball’s Morris named second team preseason underclassmen All-American

The Miller School’s Tanner Morris was named a second team preseason Underclassmen All-American by Rawlings and Perfect Game, earning a spot among the top players in the classes of 2017, 2018 and 2019.

Morris, a UVa commit, earned second team all-VISAA Division I honors last year while at STAB. He’s listed as a shortstop in the Perfect Game honors.

Morris played a big role in the Mavericks’ win over Woodberry earlier this week, helping execute a double steal to score a game-tying run. He then scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

“We brought an energy that we didn’t have earlier in the game,” Morris said after the Miller win. “It’s still early in the season so we’re really working on everything, the hitting, pitching and the defense. Hopefully we’ll keep progressing and get to where we want to be, where we know we can be.”

Several other locals that made High Honorable Mention from Perfect Game and Rawlings were Miller’s Nathon Gentry, Fork Union’s Adam Hackenberg and STAB’s Nic Kent, a UVa commit.

On honorable mention, Covenant’s Jake Haney, a William and Mary commit and the Eagles’ Will Moore, also a William and Mary commit, made the list. Miller’s Ethan Murray also made the list.

Other first team and second team Perfect Game-Rawlings honorees from Virginia included UVa-bound Hunter Perdue out of Grassfield in Chesapeake on first team. On second team, Clemson-bound catcher Matthew Cooper, Millbrook righty Anthony Simonelli, Vanderbilt-committed catcer Tyler Solomon of Battlefield High.

On third team, Bassett catcher Nathan Perry and Hickory High third baseman Mikey Polansky were honored.
