Strong Start: Fluvanna explodes early in win over Waynesboro

Fluvanna County football has had some slow starts this season before playing better and getting on track as the game progresses.

Friday’s 49-8 win over Waynesboro did not follow that trend in the slightest.

“Most games we’re a slow-starting team and build as the game goes on, but this is the first time we came out and jumped on somebody, and it was a total team effort,” said Fluvanna coach Mike Morris.

On the first drive of the game, the Flucos marched 65 yards down the field on eight-straight rushing plays, with sophomore Kobe Edmonds punching it in for the touchdown.  Then Waynesboro’s first drive resulted in a three-and-out, while Fluvanna’s next possession ended in a 43-yard touchdown run from freshman Jaden Ferguson which made it a 14-0 Fluvanna lead. Then the Fluco defense stepped up with a fumble recovery and the following play was an 18-yard run from junior Keontae Hearns for a touchdown to make things 21-0.

“We wanted to keep pushing, and keep trying to do what we know we can do,” Hearns said.

That’s exactly what the Flucos did, as they scored again after that to make it a 29-0 Fluco lead in the first quarter.  But Fluvanna’s team-wide surge didn’t stop there.

Early in the second quarter Senior Elijah Bullock came up with a 70-yard punt return for a touchdown to grow the lead to 36-0.  Then later in the quarter, the Flucos added another touchdown off a 29-yard pass from Edmonds to senior Cameron Holland, and then another rushing touchdown from junior Jamorris Lewis along with great team defense which resulted in a 49-0 halftime lead.

While they didn’t score in the second half, the final score win for the Flucos in dominant fashion that has them feeling good going into next week with the start of Jefferson District play with Charlottesville next week.

“What I like about playing Waynesboro this week is that they run a similar offense as Charlottesville, so we’ll be able to practice for that offense again this coming week,” Morris said.

Hearns was the Flucos’ leading rusher for the Flucos with 102 yards on four attempts with a touchdown. Edmonds rushed for a score while throwing for another and 94 yards through the air, completing three of his five passes.  Holland was the leading receiver with two catches for 58 yards and a touchdown. Ferguson had two touchdowns, with one rushing and the other from recovering a Fluvanna fumble.

“(We) just want to keep focused, keep grinding, keep trying to get better and keep preparing ourselves and getting as good as we can get,” Hearns said.

The Flucos will host Charlottesville High Friday at 7 p.m.
