Strong Close: William Monroe beats Warren County

William Monroe isn’t necessarily in must-win games every week, but the situation isn’t far from it.

For two weeks now, the Dragons have delivered.

William Monroe scored 23 second half points Friday night on the road to beat Warren County 23-7, picking up another Northwestern District win behind a 265-yard effort from Dupree Rucker on 37 carries.

Rucker continued his bell cow running back ways with yet another 200+ yard game, including a 48-yard touchdown sprint with 9:49 left that all but put the game out of reach for Warren County. Rucker averaged 7.2 yards per carry on the day.

While Rucker was carrying the load, Monroe had just enough versatility to cash in on his work, with Jared Knights scoring on a quarterback sneak and Logan Barbour hauling in a touchdown pass from Knights on third and long to make it 13-7 Monroe. Barbour also had a pick with 6:16 left to help seal it, snagging the ball after Kaiden Pritchett tipped the ball. Will Auer’s field goal with 1:06 left also helped ice the game.

Barbour finished with three catches for 96 yards as well as 20 yards on the ground. Phillip Shifflett picked up 19 yards on six touches. Defensively, Xzabia Kolpack had three sacks.

The Dragons (4-4) now have two straight wins and will try and make it three in a row against George Mason at home Friday.
