Staunton River powers past Western in Region 3A West

Make no mistake, trying to slow down Staunton River’s offense is hard for most any team, it’s just that Western Albemarle has a particularly tough time with the Golden Eagles.

For the second year in a row, Staunton River put up more than 80 points on the Warriors, this time rolling 87-40 in the Region 3A West first round clash as the Golden Eagles move on to face Magna Vista, who dropped Waynesboro last night.

Staunton River used a combination of Grayson Overstreet and Kalip Jones to pick apart the Western defense, with Overstreet going for 289 yards and five touchdowns on 16 touches at a clip of 18.1 yards per carry. Jones went for 204 yards and five touchdowns on the ground  at 13.6 yards per carry. Staunton River got the job done entirely on the ground without a single passing yard, and they finished with 603 rushing yards.

Western countered with a heavy dose of Derek Domecq and Jack Weyher through the air, reprising the roles that Sam Hearn and Domecq, then as a wideout, played in last year’s epic battle with the Golden Eagles. Domecq threw for 361 yards and five touchdowns on 21-for-39 passing while also rushing for 69 yards and a score on 15 carries. Weyher was his favorite target on the night as he hauled in three scores on nine catches for 218 yards. Noah Yourkavitch also got in on the receiving action with 91 yards and a touchdown on six catches.

Defensively, Domecq had 8.5 tackles to lead western while Jarrett Smith had 6.0 tackles.
