STAB boys lacrosse powers through delays past Woodberry

The St. Anne’s-Belfield boys lacrosse team — and especially Joe Robertson — scored early and often and was not hindered by a pair of lightning delays in a 17-9 win over Woodberry Forest on the road Friday afternoon.

The Saints got eight goals from Robertson while Jack Schultz and Connor Shellenberger added three apiece in the rout as one of the state’s top offenses got rolling in a big way.

Robertson scored 10 seconds into the game, and after Keen Griffin evened things for Woodberry at 6:32, the Saints took over.

STAB got two in a row from Jack Schultz and another from Robertson 26 seconds before the end of the quarter to take a 4-1 lead after one.

Shellenberger notched his first of the game for the Saints with 9:34 to go in the second, the last goal before the first delay.

Not even the 45-minute holdup could slow down the STAB offense. The Saints came out of the restart with goals by Robertson, Shellenberger and Emmett Barger to extend their lead.

“The biggest thing is staying loose,” Robertson said. “You have no idea when you’re going to get back on the field and you can’t control it. You really just need to relax and make sure you drink a lot of water.”

The teams agreed to skip halftime due to the earlier delay, but right as the second quarter expired lightning forced a second clearance of the field. The rain wasn’t as heavy, but the delay lasted roughly as long as the first.

After the second break, the Tigers attack came out much sharper. Mack Daniels netted Woodberry’s second goal of the game a minute into the third quarter, while the Tigers also got goals from Griffin and Taylor Tucker in the frame. Unfortunately for them, STAB got a goal each from Schultz and Shellenberger to keep a solid margin, leading 11-4 after three.

“We love to come out and get a quick start on attack as well as on defense,” Robertson said. “We definitely did that today — we came out strong.”

Robertson added five more goals in the fourth quarter, sandwiching two around Woodberry tallies from Daniels and Gray Hathaway. After Woodberry got within six with seven-and-a-half minutes left, he dumped in two more in rapid succession and quashed at chance of a miracle Tiger comeback before getting his final tally with 2:47 remaining.

“One of the things we work on is possessing the ball and working for the best shot possible,” Robertson said. “I think we executed on that as well.”

For the game, STAB outshot Woodberry 26 to 20. Randolph Walker registered nine saves for Woodberry while Jeff Perkins also had nine for the Saints. Woodberry went 1-for-4 on extra-man chances, while STAB was 0-for-3.

Griffin and Daniels led the Tigers with two goals each.

STAB has a quick turnaround as it travels to the Potomac School tomorrow afternoon.
