STAB boys lacrosse goes off in third, takes down Collegiate

Collegiate’s boys lacrosse team was able to throw the kitchen sink at St. Anne’s-Belfield early, but the Saints were patient and that paid off mightily. After a back-and-forth first half, the third quarter was all STAB as its high-powered offense flexed some muscle and paved the way to a 13-7 win.

“It took us a while to hit our stride so we definitely needed that burst to pull away,” said Saints coach Bo Perriello. “There’s no question that we need the ball and I thought Magnus Gould did a great job on faceoffs. We had a good day and it helped us control the possession time, particularly in the second half.”

Collegiate took a 3-1 lead into the second as the Cougars scored all three goals in a 90 second window. STAB cut the lead to 3-2 with the first of six goals from Jack Schultz and then equalized it just a little over a minute later on a shot from Joe Robertson. The two teams traded goals and went into halftime deadlocked at 4-4.

“We had to be really careful and deliberate with our matchups,” said Cougars coach Andrew Stanley. “It was going okay early and that’s tough because they have some really, really good lacrosse players over there. So we capitalized early, scooped a few ground balls and took advantage of that. Defensively, things worked out in our favor early, but then not so much down the stretch.”

Out of the break, the Saints came out swinging. Between Gould’s work on faceoffs and with goalkeeper Jeffrey Perkins and the STAB defense coming up with stop after stop, the offense responded with seven unanswered second half goals to take a commanding 11-4 lead. Three of them came from Schultz, who sacrificed his body on a pair of them to lead the scoring spurt.

“The big thing is just getting to the goal,” Schultz said. “I wanted to do everything I could to help my team so against a team like Collegiate, that means going through the crease a lot and taking some hits. But it’s always worth it.”

With 7:10 left on the clock, the Cougars ended the over 17-minute scoring drought on a goal from Joseph White. White scored twice more in a 90 second burst to cut things to 11-7. However, with Schultz hammering home his sixth of the day and Michael McGraw scoring a minute late on a man-up opportunity, the Saints were able to close out the contest with a comfortable six-goal margin.

“In the first half we were dodging from the top and we changed that to try and spread them out,” Schultz said. “We wanted to give our attackmen and middies some room to operate around their defensemen. That’s what we got in the second half.”

On the night, Schultz’s six goals were accompanied by two-goal performances from Robertson, Connor Shellenberger, and Emmett Barger.  Perkins finished with 12 saves. Defenseman Michael DiGiacomo had four ground balls.
