Spring Roundup 5.21.16: Nelson girls soccer, Western baseball and softball, Fluvanna girls soccer pick up conference wins

Western Albemarle baseball may be putting it all together at just the right time.

After shutting out Monticello to close the regular season, the No. 4-seeded Warriors opened the Conference 29 tournament Friday with a 9-0 victory over No. 5 Broadway to advance to the Conference 29 semifinals Tuesday. It was Western’s third-straight shutout.

Derek Domecq went the distance with a complete game shutout with four strikeouts while allowing just six hits.

Western’s offense dealt Broadway a massive blow in the first inning with an eight-run frame as Ryan Sukovich doubled in a pair of runs, Domecq knocked one in, Matt Mandell walked with the bases loaded and Sam James connected on a two-RBI single.

Sukovich finished 2-for-3 on the night.

The Warriors will face top-seeded Turner Ashby at 5 p.m. at Spotswood Tuesday with a region tournament berth on the line.

Fluvanna girls soccer pulls upset

Fluvanna County’s girls soccer team has played some strong defense this year, but the Flucos’ Conference 29 quarterfinal performance may have been their finest work yet as Fluvanna upended Monticello 1-0.

The No. 5-seeded Flucos managed to shut out fourth-seeded Monticello and in the third overtime, in a golden goal situation, Katie Stutz rose up for Fluvanna and scored the game-winner.

The Flucos advance to play Western Albemarle Tuesday in the Conference 29 semifinals, hosted at Fluvanna at 5:30 p.m.

Western Albemarle softball knocks off Monticello

Western Albemarle’s softball team got the job done Friday night as the No. 6-seeded Warriors upset No. 3 Monticello in the Conference 29 quarterfinals with a 4-2 victory.

Western senior Kara Madison handled the pitching for the Warriors in the win, limiting the Mustangs to just two runs.

The Warriors will face Broadway in the Conference 29 semifinals at Fluvanna County Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Nelson County girls soccer beats Buffalo Gap

Nelson County’s girls soccer team stayed unbeaten with a 3-0 victory in the first round of the Conference 36 tournament Thursday.

The top-seeded Governors got goals from Alice Clair, Mackenzie Ladd and Emily Ferren. Clair scored off a Ferren through ball while Ladd notched her goal on a cross from Alley Wulin. Ferren’s goal was unassisted.

The Governors will play Wilson Memorial Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Nelson.
