Spring Roundup 5.19.16: Monroe girls soccer, Western girls lacrosse and baseball pick up wins

William Monroe girls soccer put together a shutout victory over Strasburg, rolling 6-0 over the Rams with an array of scorers carrying the load.

Rachel DeMasters scored twice for the Dragons while Ariana Mills, Kayla Burton, Elizabeth Tibbetts and Maya Burton each scored one goal. Burton also had an assist, as did Juliet Karnes, Kinsey McInturff and Kristin Manz.

 

Western baseball beats Monticello

 

Western Albemarle’s baseball team beat Monticello 6-0 Wednesday night with a one-hit gem by Sam Hearn leading the way as the Warriors picked up some momentum headed into the postseason.

Hearn allowed just a single hit and didn’t allow a single walk while striking out nine.

Henry Kreienbaum had an RBI double in the game, breaking Bryan Lescanec’s school career hits record set back in 2004. Ryan Sukovich also had a big night with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Chris Hughes finished 2-for-2 for the Warriors while Luke Tenuta went 2-for-3.

Both squads start the Conference 29 baseball tournament Friday night.

 

Western girls lacrosse advances to conference final

 

Western Albemarle’s girls lacrosse team beat Charlottesville 14-1 in the Charlottesville Conference semifinals Wednesday night.

The Warriors (12-3) move on to the conference final next week where they’ll face Monticello.  

Sammie Magargee finished with two goals and two assists to lead the way for Western while Audrey Russell and Kate Snyder scored twice each.

Beyond that trio, eight other Warriors scored a goal each. Among those scorers, Mady Starsia, Hanna Schuler and Genevieve Russell all also dished out an assist.

 

Goochland softball blows past Bluestone

Goochland’s softball squad beat Bluestone Wednesday night.

Jordyn Laing led the way offensively, going 3-for-3 with three RBI. Caitlyn Robinson also had a solid night going 2-for-2 while Katelin Martin went 2-for-3. Kailyn Spencer struck out seven in the circle. Catoria Towles went 2-for-3 at the plate.

 

Orange baseball falls to Halifax

Orange County’s baseball team ran into a top notch pitcher Wednesday night, battling Halifax junior Andrew Abbott, a UVa commit in the Conference 16 final. The Hornets couldn’t overcome that hurdle, falling 9-2 to the Comets.

The loss forces Orange into another elimination game for third place Friday in the Conference 16 consolation game. The winner heads to the Group 5A North tournament.

Abbott struck out 12 and scattered five hits in the win.

Keenan Williams went 2-for-4 at the plate and scored one of the Hornets two runs. Tre Smith scored a run.

Dalton Jobe notched the Hornets’ lone RBI.

Arthur Watts went 2-for-4 for Halifax with three RBI.
