Spring Roundup 4.15.16: Covenant baseball, Albemarle boys and girls soccer pick up wins

Covenant baseball beat Seton 20-4 in five innings on the road Thursday, with Matt Shobe improving to 5-1 on the year by picking up the win on the mound.

 

Freshman Jack Marshall finished with a pair of hits and made his pitching debut for the Eagles, with Shobe, Miller, Mahone & Marshall combining for a two-hitter.

 

Covenant is now 14-4 on season.

 

Albemarle boys soccer drops Powhatan

 

Albemarle boys soccer beat Powhatan 6-1 Thursday night, with a strong offensive effort leading the way.

 

Brandon Mahon and Eliya Budugure each had two goals for the Patriots while Brendan Moyers and Griffin Coffey rounded out the scoring effort. Moyers and Coffey each also had an assist.

 

Andrew Weber had a pair of assists while Ernesto Garcia and Sergio Cardona finished with one each.

 

Albemarle girls soccer drops Powhatan

 

Albemarle’s girls soccer team picked up a 4-0 win over Powhatan Thursday night.

 

The Patriots unleashed a barrage of shots at the Indians while facing a strong effort from Kylie Mailo in the net for Powhatan as she finished with 19 saves.

 

Makinna Winterton, Sheila Ford, Sunny Gelnovatch and Leticia Freitas finished with goals for the Patriots while Brooke Bauman and Gracie Williams each finished with assists.

 

Albemarle goalies Aiyanah Tyler-Cooper and Catie Grebe combined for the shutout with a lot of help from the Albemarle defense that didn’t allow a single shot on goal.

 

Albemarle baseball beats Powhatan 12-10

 

Albemarle’s baseball team won a wild one Thursday, eventually beating Powhatan 12-10 for a key Jefferson District victory.

 

Ryan Porter had three hits and struck out four batters in a two-inning save to help spark the Patriots past Powhatan. Jacob Nash also had a solid night at the plate with a pair of hits and five RBI. Scott Reid finished with a hit and three runs knocked in.

 

Bryan Malboeuf picked up the win on the mound.

 

The Patriots will take on Louisa County Friday at 6 p.m.

 

Orange baseball beats Charlottesville

 

Earlier this week, Bradley Hanner shut down the opposition’s bats with a 19-strikeout no-hitter. Thursday against Charlottesville, the Hornets’ lineup did most of the heavy lifting as Orange beat Charlottesville 18-6, highlighted by a 10-run fourth inning.

 

Justin Beaty went 2-for-3 on the night including a triple. He finished with four RBI. Christian Boswell and Caleb Clenney (2-for-3) each had three RBI while Dalton Jobe and Jacob Barragan knocked in two runs each. Tre Smith went 2-for-3 with an RBI. Orange piled up 14 hits on the night in the game that ended after five innings.

 

For Charlottesville, Banks Northington led the Black Knights with a 2-for-3 outing on a home run and a triple. Leadoff hitter Ben Minor also notched an RBI.

 

Barragan picked up the win on the mound for the Hornets, striking out three in 3.2 innings of work.  

 

Fork Union baseball falls to Hargrave

 

Fork Union jumped out to a two-run lead through four innings, but Hargrave put together a strong surge in the fifth inning, capitalizing on a slew of FUMA errors and eventually finished off a 10-6 victory over the Blue Devils.

 

Jacob Grabeel went 2-for-3 for Fork Union.

 

Mattox Lawson led Hargrave offensively with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, with a double and a home run while notching three RBIs. Logan Barker went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a pair of RBI. Mark Loving also went 3-for-4 for the Tigers.

 

Fork Union finished with nine total errors.

Western baseball drops Louisa

 

Western Albemarle’s baseball team beat Louisa 4-0 Thursday, with Derek Domecq throwing a two-hit complete game shutout.

 

Domecq also struck out six. In the second inning, Henry Kreienbaum blasted a two-out, two-run double to bring in Domecq and Chris Hughes. Kreienbaum quickly followed with a run of his own after Sam Hearn brought him in with a double.

 

Western (6-4) takes on Orange Tuesday on the road.

 

Louisa softball beats Western

 

Louisa County’s softball team beat Western Albemarle 4-1 Thursday night, with the Lions getting a solid performance from Taylor Robinson who struck out four batters in the circle and went 2-for-2 with a home run at the plate.

 

Morgan Mitchell and Taylor Dickerson each went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Lions.
