Fork Union trounces Richmond Patriots as Hackenberg hits for the cycle

Fork Union’s Adam Hackenberg hit for the cycle Thursday night while notching seven RBI as the Blue Devils trounced the Richmond Patriots of the Central Virginia Homeschool Athletic Association 20-9 in five innings in Richmond.

Hackenberg went 4-for-5 with the the single, double, triple and home run to complete the cycle and notched the seven RBI. His efforts helped the Blue Devils build a 20-3 lead going into the bottom of the fifth and Fork Union held on to complete the run-ruling despite surrendering six runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Tyler Simon went 2-for-2 with three RBI while Zach Pace went 2-for-5 with a double and four RBI. Jacob Grabeel went 2-for-5 and Jonathan Keaton went 2-for-4.

Fork Union is now 5-4 and the two squads will square off again Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Fork Union.

 

Monroe girls soccer wins opener

William Monroe girls soccer got off on the right foot Thursday night as the Dragons won their season opening match 5-0 over Central Woodstock.

Freshman Kayla Burton and senior Kinsey McInturff each scored two goals for the Dragons while sophomore Ashley Harrison had a goal and an assist. Emma Springer, Leah Kirssin and Anna Baker each also had assists. In goal, senior keeper Maddie Birckhead finished with four saves.

The Dragons will look to move to 2-0 April 5 against Warren County.

 

STAB girls lacrosse drops Western Reserve

McKenzie Maurer set the table for St. Anne’s-Belfield girls lacrosse Thursday night as the Saints rolled 18-4 past Western Reserve Academy out of Ohio.

Maurer dished out six assists for the Saints, helping vault Caroline DiGiacomo and Annie Cory to huge scoring nights with DiGiacomo notching five goals and an assist while Cory scored four times. Maddie Hunter and freshman Ivy Allen also finished with hat tricks with Hunter adding an assist. Carlin Maurer finished with a pair of goals and eighth grader Claire Schotta had one goal.

The Saints will next take on Merion-Mercy Tuesday night.

 

Covenant baseball shuts out North Cross

Covenant baseball picked up a solid road win against North Cross Thursday afternoon, run-ruling the Raiders in five innings.

The Eagles’ pitchers were incredibly efficient, with Matt Shobe and Jacob Haney combining to throw 71 pitches in five innings of shutout work. The tandem struck out eight, allowed one walk and just two hits.

Offensively, four different players had extra base hits for the Eagles, as Shobe, Tyler Mahone, Will Moore and Donovan Jackson all had big hits. Shobe had three hits on the night.

Tandem Friends’ girls soccer team beat Wakefield Country Day 8-1 Thursday afternoon.

The Quakers got a hat trick from Kate Dean-McKinney as well as two goals each from Laila Whynott and Olivia Bullock.

 

Western girls tennis beats Powhatan 8-1

On a gusty day, Western’s girls tennis team managed to play through the wind and pick up an 8-1 victory over Powhatan Thursday afternoon. The Warriors are 4-0 and head into a critical matchup with archrival Albemarle Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Western boys tennis sweeps Powhatan

The Western boys tennis team made short work of Powhatan Thursday, rolling 9-0 over the Indians. The Warriors will take on Albemarle at Albemarle Tuesday in a rivalry clash.
