Spring Boys Roundup 5.14.15: Western boys tennis, Louisa baseball pick up key wins

The Western Albemarle boys tennis team wrapped up the Conference 29 championship Thursday, rolling 6-0 with a singles sweep to beat Waynesboro.

By qualifying for the title game, the Warriors had already secured a berth in the Region 3A West tournament as had Waynesboro.

Western will play May 25 in the region tournament.

Albemarle boys soccer shuts out Powhatan

Albemarle’s boys soccer team made short work of Powhatan Thursday night, rolling 7-0 over the Indians to stay unbeaten on the season.

The Patriots (14-0-1) got a pair of goals from Marcel Berry and a goal each from five other players, with Grant Kersey, Brendan Moyers, Aidan Toms, Adonis Krasniqi and Andrew Weber notching goals.

Brendan Moyers and Robert Palma-Galeas set the table with a pair of assist each while Eilya Budugure, Weber and Krasniqi also had helpers.

Matthew Booth and Thomas Leckrone combined for four saves for Albemarle in goal while putting together a shutout.

Albemarle will host Louisa County Monday in their final regular season home game at 7 p.m.

Louisa edges Orange baseball

In a pitcher’s duel at Louisa County Thursday night, the Lions pushed past Orange County for a 2-1 win with the decisive run coming in the bottom of the seventh.

Will White earned the victory for the Lions with a complete game effort where he leaned on his defense as he struck out just two but gave up only a single earned run on a home run by Orange sophomore Trevon Smith.

Cole Hollins and Jordan Snead had the Lions’ two RBI with Louisa managing just two hits on the night while Orange committed four total errors.

The late inning run squandered a strong outing from Bradley Hanner for the Hornets, as he pitched 6.1 innings, struck out seven and allowed just one earned run and two hits.

Orange will try and bounce back quickly as they travel to take on William Monroe Friday at 7 p.m. while the Lions play Tuesday at Albemarle.

Albemarle baseball rolls Powhatan

Albemarle’s baseball team got on track Thursday night with a 10-2 victory over Powhatan, leaning on a strong effort by Nic Parsons on the mound.

Parsons struck out six in a complete game outing. He got some help at the plate from DG Archer who had a pair of hits.

Western baseball run-rules Charlottesville

With an explosive third inning, Western Albemarle blew open a game with Charlottesville, taking an 8-0 lead in what became a 13-2, six-inning victory for the Warriors.

Western got a balanced attack at the plate going against the Black Knights, as seven different Western players posted RBIs in the blowout. Sam James went 3-for-3 with a trio of runs while Harrison Lund had a pair of hits including a double and three RBIs to lead the Warriors in that category.

Stevie Mangrum ended the contest with a triple that plated Jerome Pugh and James. Henry Kreienbaum went 2-for-3 with an RBI.

Sam Hearn got the win on the mound for the Warriors, throwing four innings and striking out four. Chris McGahren came on in relief in his first career stint on the mound for Western and struck out two in two innings of work.
