Spotswood football blows past Fluvanna in region quarterfinals

It’s no secret that the 21st century hasn’t been kind to Fluvanna football.  With all of that negative history however, the current incarnation of the Flucos have helped change things around the program, with this year marking the second of two-straight Region 3C tournament appearances for Fluvanna.

That second appearance ended for the seventh-seeded Flucos with a 48-8 defeat at the hands of unbeaten Spotswood.

“Anytime you can get to the playoffs it’s a good season, Fluvanna had been on hard times for a while, getting to the playoffs two years in a row is good, but we’re still looking for that first playoff win,” said Fluvanna coach Mike Morris.

Fluvanna came into the game at Spotswood looking for that first playoff win in more than 30 years since the 1980s, and while the effort was certainly there, the Blazers simply proved too much for the Flucos to handle..

The first quarter showed just how tough it was going to be for the Flucos as a blocked field goal and a fumbled kickoff resulted in quick drives that gave Spotswood a 14-0 early lead, with a touchdown pass from Ryan High and a short plunge from Ben Conahan providing the difference.  After that, it seemed that no matter what Fluvanna tried, nothing worked. The offense was kept at bay by the Blazer defense, giving the ball back to Spotswood’s offensive juggernaut.  Things wouldn’t get any better for the Flucos either in the half, as they would go to the break looking at a 28-0 deficit on the scoreboard.

While things certainly looked grim, Fluvanna’s effort never changed.

“We had a lot of seniors, they weren’t going to let the effort levels change,” Morris said.

As the Blazer advantage grew, the Flucos never quit and their grit eventually paid off in the fourth quarter as a 28-yard rushing score from Keontae Hearns and a Kobe Edmonds pass to Jaden Ferguson for the 2-point conversion got Fluvanna on the scoreboard.  Hearns ended up with that touchdown and 92 yards on the ground. The defense also forced a turnover on downs late.

Shortly after that stop, the final horn sounded on Fluvanna’s football season in the Region 3C tournament.  The Flucos lose a deep senior class, and those who are returning to the program next year know that there is work to be done if they want to make it three-straight playoff trips.

“Next year we won’t be as big, but I think we’ll have some more skill guys and a little bit more speed, we’re gonna have to get in the weight room and get stronger,” said Morris.

The group will certainly have to work hard to make it back next year and they’ll do it with a pretty obvious goal in mind.

“You gotta build the foundation, we haven’t won that first playoff game yet, and that’s the next step,” said Morris.
