Second Chance: Albemarle girls lacrosse beats Patrick Henry-Roanoke in region semis

You’ve got to make the most of second chances.

Albemarle girls lacrosse certainly did.

Back in April, Patrick Henry-Roanoke beat Albemarle by four goals. In Thursday’s Class 5, Region D semifinals in Roanoke, Albemarle avenged that loss and punched its ticket to the state tournament with a 15-9 win.

Morgan Rose powered the win with seven goals and an assist, igniting an offense where the other eight goals came from eight different players. Erin Keller, Kelsey Myers, Rheed Vineyard, Anna Murray, Savannah Grierson, Jenn Wendelken and Bridget Pinnata each score once with Murray, Grierson and Ashley Cramer each chipping in an assist.

The Albemarle defense held Patrick Henry in check throughout, with Caroline Sheppard finishing with 12 saves, 10 of them in the second half as Albemarle fought to make an 8-2 halftime lead stick.

Albemarle will face Mountain View Wednesday at 6 p.m. in the Region 5D championship before moving on to the state tournament.
