Scharf, Crawford and Rollins each take home Region II titles

Considering how February has treated the sport, it was all too fitting that the Region II wrestling championship be difficult. Held in Winchester and starting on Sunday morning, the tournament did not end until 3 a.m. Monday morning. But when it was all said and done, four wrestlers from the Jefferson District punched their tickets for the Group AA championship in Salem.

A defending Group AA champion last season, Fluvanna County’s Willie Crawford will head back to the Civic Center looking to earn his second straight title after taking first place at 189 pounds. Teammate Jonathan Wharton will join Crawford this weekend, earning a bid with his fourth place showing at 125.

Monticello’s Timmy Rollins was crowned a Region II champion with his victory in the heavy weight division with an 9-8 decision coming in quadruple overtime.

Josh Scharf of Louisa County gave the JD three first place winners with his top finish at 112 pounds.

Orange County’s Phillip Coleman will also head to the state tournament after his fourth place finish at 103.
