Rejuvenated: Second-chance Flucos advance in Region 3A West softball

Fluvanna County’s softball team is making the most of the second chance they earned last week with a hard-fought win in Conference 29’s third place game.

Monday, the Flucos went on the road and won a wild, back-and-forth clash with Lord Botetourt in the Region 3A West tournament’s first round. The Flucos used a four-run sixth inning to pick up the 9-6 road win and advance to the region quarterfinals.

Fluvanna jumped out to a 3-1 thanks to a couple of walks and a Rebecca Crothers single. Gracie Walton and Mariah Tawney also had first inning hits.

Lord Botetourt refused to go quietly, charging ahead in the fifth to take a narrow 4-3 lead. The Flucos responded though, reeling off four runs in the sixth to take a 7-4 lead. Crothers started the rally with a leadoff walk, Walton and Madison Kennedy singled. Walton, Tawney, Hannah Breeden and Kennedy all scored, with Candice Shaheen’s 2-RBI single doing the bulk of the damage, but Victoria Belew also had an RBI in the frame.

Fluvanna then added two insurance runs in the seventh before withstanding a rally attempt by the Cavaliers to hold on for the 9-6 victory.

The Flucos will take on unbeaten Brookville Tuesday, a squad that has won two of the last three Group 3A state titles.
