Region wrestling roundup: Louisa, Orange, Albemarle, CHS and Madison advance wrestlers to state meets

Louisa County’s Austin Mills got the job done Saturday, winning the Class 4, Region B championship at 145 pounds to help power the Lions to a fifth place finish in the region tournament held at Powhatan.

 

Mills edged Powhatan’s Jeffrey Hoyt 5-2 to win the region title, a big victory for Mills who jumped up from 120 pounds to 145 pounds this season.

 

The Lions also got a big lift from a runner-up performance by Mason Morris who lost in the title match on a pin by Eastern View’s J.J. Laird. Cameron Hornsby also snagged a runner-up finish at heavyweight, losing 5-2 in the title match in a tight decision.

 

Drake White took third for Louisa with a 8-0 major decision at 106 pounds while Ben Froschauer took third at 170 pounds.

 

Cole Cutright’s fourth place at 220 pounds rounded out the state tournament qualifiers for the Lions, with Nathan Schwartz grabbing an alternate spot with a fifth place finish at 120 pounds.

 

Orange and Albemarle qualify wrestlers for states

Orange County didn’t have an individual region champion when the Hornets hosted Saturday’s Class, 5, Region D championships, but the Hornets depth helped them place fifth as a team and qualify six wrestlers for the state tournament.

 

Nicky Benner at 132, David Steigler at 138 and Chance Bowers at 145 all three placed third, winning their third place matches by pin. Riley Rudnick also took third at 160 pounds while Truth Wilson at 220 and Blake Wilson at 113 took fourth to round out the state qualifiers for the Hornets. Jayden Joseph took fifth at 120 to earn an alternate spot and Josh Benner at 106, Ray Pierce at heavyweight and Dylan Hale at 152 all finished sixth.

 

Albemarle’s Brock Shorten earned a spot in the state meet with a third place finish on a 1-0 decision in the third place match at 170 pounds. The Patriots’ Donovan Berry took fifth at 195 pounds to earn an alternate slot while Yared Velazquez at 126, Thomas Vales at 182 and Nolan Pitsenberger at 138 each finished in sixth place.

 

Charlottesville’s Kenner, Lewandowski move on

Charlottesville’s wrestling team put together a pair of qualifiers at the Class 4, Region D meet in Lynchburg Saturday.

 

Isaac Kenner will head to the Class 4 state meet after finishing third at 152 pounds after winning the third place match on a pin. Teammate Aiden Lewandowski took fourth at 106 pounds, falling in the third place match.

 

David Wiles took sixth for the Black Knights at 120 pounds while Chyna Stewart finished sixth at 195 pounds.

 

 

Madison County puts four in Class 2 championships

At the Class 2, Region B championships at Stuarts Draft Saturday, Madison County qualified four wrestlers for next week’s state tournament in Salem.

 

Freshman Marques Blakey at 113 pounds and Christian Corbin at 220 pounds led the way with third place finishes while Chase Ryder at 132 pounds and Rodney Lewis at 195 each took fourth to punch their ticket to the state meet.

 

Nick Pumphrey finished fifth at 285 to earn an alternate slot.

 

William Monroe competes in Region 3B tourney

William Monroe competed in the Class 3, Region B tournament and Alex Hoffman took fifth at 160 for the Dragons to grab an alternate spot for the state tournament.

 

James Ayers took sixth at 106 for the Dragons while Blaise Van Dyke took sixth at 145, Josh Dillon took sixth at 152 and Chris Bairgh took sixth at 285.
