Quick Start: Albemarle boys beat William Fleming

Playing region rival William Fleming for the second time this year, The Albemarle boys basketball team jumped out to an early lead and spread the wealth in a decisive 60-47 win over the Colonels in the first round of the Daily Progress Tournament.

Ben Wesson nailed two threes in the first quarter and Albemarle wasted no time getting comfortable, taking a 24-10 lead after one. The Colonels from Roanoke were only outscored by Albemarle 13-12 in the second but still trailed by 14 at the half.

“I thought our offensive attack was really balanced.” Albemarle coach Greg Maynard said. “Our defense caused them a lot of problems there in the early part of the game, getting into our fast break, knocking down some outside shots. William Fleming is a good team and I knew that wasn’t going to last the whole game.”

Fleming trimmed the lead to 46-34 after three, but a couple of inside buckets by Ben Wesson and Christian Humes signaled in the reserves by the end of the 4th.

The Patriots had a balanced offensive attack all night. La’Mari Parler led the team with 17 points and nine boards. Humes added 13 points and 4 assists, and the Wesson brothers scored 12 a piece, with Carter hauling in six boards and Ben coming away with four steals.

The win marks Albemarle’s second over William Fleming, the first coming in early December when the Patriots went down to Roanoke and rolled 66-44. Albemarle, Fleming, and Patrick Henry, all Region 5D members, have created a strange triangle this season. Patrick Henry beat Albemarle 69-66 on the road, then Fleming beat Patrick Henry on a buzzer beater on the road before dropping both contests to Albemarle.

“We always see (Fleming and Patrick Henry) in the region playoffs.” Albemarle coach Greg Maynard said. “I’m really pleased to have beaten Fleming both times, but who knows what will happen down the line, and Patrick Henry’s got a really good team. I’d love to meet them again.”

Albemarle (5-1) will get another early season look at a Region opponent tomorrow when they play Riverside, last year’s Region 5D champions in the semifinals of the Daily Progress Holiday Hoops Classic. The Rams edged out Charlottesville 73-68 in overtime in the late game. The two will face off at 4:15pm tomorrow at Charlottesville High School for a shot at the title game.

William Fleming (6-2) will face Charlottesville (4-3) in the consolation bracket at 12:45pm tomorrow, also at CHS.
