Powhatan blows past Western

There wasn’t anything fancy about what Powhatan put togetherFriday night against Western Albemarle.

The Indians came out, handed the ball to Logan Allen and leaned on Chance Morris at receiver, daring the Warriors to stop what’s been Powhatan’s bread and butter in big games much of the year.

Western couldn’t find a way to slow things down and fell 53-16 to the Indians who continue to gather steam for the playoffs and now sit at 8-1 on the season. Western falls to 7-2.

Allen rushed for 282 yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries, ripping off touchdown runs of 47, 37 and 43 yards in the first half alone. His fourth score came early in the third from 44 yards out to push the Indians lead to 36-16 after a two-point conversion by Allen right out of the gate in the second half.

Western couldn’t counter punch, posting a scoreless second half against the Indians’ defense. Morris hauled in 145 receiving yards and two touchdowns on seven receptions. The first came late in the first half from 25 yards out and the second came late in the third from 29 yards out. Powhatan quarterback Cambrun Graham was efficient behind center, going 12-for-15 for 179 yards and the two touchdowns to Morris.

Powhatan jumped out to a 21-3 lead by the middle of the second quarter with those three long Allen touchdowns runs doing the bulk of the work.

Powhatan outgained Western with 505 yards of total offense to the Warriors’ 256.

Sam Hearn went 12 for 26 for 156 yards for the Warriors while Powhatan locked up Western’s run game, holding Oliver Herndon to just 3.3 yards per carry on 11 attempts. Henry Kreienbaum went for 49 yards and a touchdown on two catches in his return to the lineup while Michael Mullin led the Western defense with 6.5 total tackles.

The Indians will host Charlottesville next week in their regular season finale while Western will try and regroup on the road against Fluvanna County before jumping into Region 3A West tournament play.
