Own the Third: Fluvanna girls basketball surges past Goochland

Fluvanna County’s girls basketball team wants to take care of business coming out of the locker room at halftime.

“We just had to finish, do what we had to do and do our job,” said  junior forward Khyariah Davis-Heinrich. “That’s our biggest motivation is doing our job every day at practice and push ourselves, and our coach always tells us to own the third quarter.”

The Flucos’ used a huge third quarter to beat Goochland 64-51 in Fluvanna’s home opener Thursday, riding a balanced offensive performance to the win.

In the first quarter, it seemed that neither team would find a way to create separation from the other as the squads battled to a 12-12 tie at the end of the first. Leading the charge in the quarter for the Bulldogs was Victoria Lopez, who had four of her 12 total points and finished with a double-double grabbing 15 rebounds.

In the second quarter, the momentum started to shift in favor of the Flucos. They surged out to a 9-0 run to start the quarter and wound up winning the quarter by four after some strong play from the Bulldogs.  The Flucos took a 24-20 lead into the break, with Davis-Heinrich putting up eight of her 12 points in the half — she also posted a team-leading nine rebounds.

Fluvanna exploded on a 7-0 run early in the third.  Senior guard Nevaeh Ivory helped lead the surge as she had six of her 12 points in the quarter, and would also end the game with seven rebounds and four steals.  This third quarter spark helped the Flucos take a 46-31 lead to the fourth, but they knew they needed to finish doing their job.

Throughout the fourth, Fluvanna’s lead didn’t change much at all, as the Bulldogs kept fighting led by junior Emmy Paulin who had 11 of her 16 total points in the fourth.

Meanwhile, Fluvanna forward Emma Russ had six of her 12 points in the fourth, and finished with eight rebounds and Jules Shepherd had 11 points. The strong third quarter though proved to be enough for the Flucos.

“Overall, we did an amazing job, and the team did a great job tonight getting the win,” said Davis-Heinrich.

The Flucos will look to keep things rolling Saturday when they square off with Madison County at home while Goochland looks to bounce back against Cumberland Friday as the Bulldogs open James River District play.
