Orange’s comeback comes up just short with Powhatan

With an unbeaten Powhatan team hosting, it was two physical teams in a war on Friday as a 3-1 Orange County squad made the road trip and came just shy of making a come-from-behind win. The Indians raced out to a two possession lead in the first half and while the Hornets answered in the second, in the end, a safety was the difference as Powhatan hung on for a 15-13 win to stay perfect.

The Indians went up 6-0 after Jacob Oglesby hit Bryce Burmaster for a 30-yard TD pass. Early in the second, Powhatan went up 13-0 with 2-yard run by Burmaster and the 13-0 score held until the break.

Orange’s offense finally got going when Kenyon Carter capped a drive with a 7-yard pass to Trevon Smith to cut it to 13-7 with 6:40 left in the third. At the end of the third frame though, the Indians pinned the Hornets deep and came up with a safety, giving the home squad a 15-7 advantage.

With their backs up against the wall, Orange got a second TD pass from Carter to Shavonn Ellis for 23 yards with 29 seconds left. The Hornets just missed on a 2-point convert to tie the game and force overtime.

For Orange, Carter was 7-for-11 passing with 105 yards and two touchdowns. Smith had 14 carries with 55 yards.

While held out of the endzone, the story offensively for the bulk of the game was Indians Justin DeLeon who had 29 carries for 115 yards. The Powhatan had 282 yards of offense to Orange’s 174.
The Hornets fall to 2-2 and will travel to face a 2-2 Albemarle team that lost on the road to an also unbeaten Louisa County squad.
