Orange football rolls in the second to beat Monticello

It was a flurry of offense at Porterfield Park as Orange County and Monticello went toe-to-toe in the first half and the Hornets turned on the jets behind two defensive scores to own the second half for a 56-35 win over the Mustangs.

Monticello got on the board first with a 13-yard touchdown run. It was a half of point, counter point football as Orange returned fire with a 60-yard touchdown on the ground from Trevon Smith. The Mustangs came back with a 40-yard rush from quarterback Kevin Jarrell to make it 13-7. The Hornets started the second quarter with a 15-yard scoring run from Shavon Ellis to go up 14-13. A drive from Monticello capped with a 10-yard run from Jarrell and a 2-pt convert gave the visitors a 21-14 lead.

Not to be outdone, Orange hit back with a drive finished by a physical 13-yard rushing touchdown from DeAngelo Hunt and it was tied again. Just a minute later, Jarrell found Austin Haverstrom for a 63-yard touchdown pass for the Mustangs. And on the next Hornets drive, quarterback Kenyon Carter hit Christopher Washington for a 17-yard TD reception.

So there it stood after the chaos, 28-28 going into the break. The second half was different though. Orange got four touchdowns before Monticello tacked one on late to change the tone of the game.

Carter started the second half spree for the Hornets with a 38-yard touchdown to Dayvon Greene. Then on the Mustangs’ ensuing drive Hunt came away with a 74-yard fumble return and it was suddenly 42-28 for Orange with 6:15 left in the third.

Hunt wasn’t done. His 85-yard fumble return for a touchdown all but put the game out of reach with 9:07 left to play. Then Hunt had a 36-yard rushing TD to make it 56-28.

Monticello got an 11-yard TD pass from Jarrell to Spencer Brookman late in the fourth to wrap up the scoring.

While Monticello had had 329 yards on the ground and 198 yards passing, the turnovers doomed the Mustangs. Orange finished with 177 yards on the ground and 132 in the air.

For the Hornets, Carter was 7-for-9 passing with 132 yards and two TD’s. Smith had 16 touches for 181 yards. Hunt had 14 carries for 100. Greene led the receiving corps with three catches for 58 yards.

On the Mustangs side, Jarrell was 11-for-28 with 198 yards and two TDs passing. He also had 16 rushes for 73 yards. Ayers finished with a 158 yards rushing on nine attempts. Brookman threw in five carries for 54 yards. Haverstrom led all receivers with four catches for 104 yards.

Orange (4-3) hosts Charlottesville (4-3) next week while Monticello (3-4)  travels to Albemarle (5-2).
