Orange football rolls past Spotsy, sets up big date with Powhatan

Orange County had two weeks to think about their meeting with Spotsylvania, and maybe the Jefferson District opener with Powhatan next week. Given their hammering of Culpeper in week one, a hiccup against Eastern View was left in the dust as the Hornets made quick work of the Knights, 56-16. But not without a little of a first half scare.

When Spotsylvania connected on a 77-yard pass to open up the game with a 6-0 lead, that only made the ensuing answer more important.

Orange answered with a long drive capped by the first of three touchdowns from DeAngelo Hunt, this one from seven yards out. Two minutes later, Tre Smith capped a quick drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, the first of three for him too. The running back duo had seven touches each and both had three touchdowns.

Kenyon Carter’s six yard pass to Kyree Carter made it 21-6 for Orange as it headed into the second. Then Smith hammered home an 11-yard TD run to put Orange up 28-6. Spotsylvania was able to tack on a 34-yard field goal to make it a 19-point game. Then a fumble recovery for a TD made it 28-16.

But from there, Orange buckled down. Hunt capped a drive late in the second with a 5-yard run to give the Hornets a 35-16 lead. And when Smith broke off a 60-yard touchdown run to start the third, the race was on. Four minutes later Hunt sprinted for 22-yard TD. Moments later, Aaron Hillary gave Orange a pick-6 and wrapped up the scoring at 56-16, still just midway through the third allowing the Hornets to work in their bench for the rest of the way.

Smith finished with seven carries for 178 yards and three TDs. Hunt finished with seven carries for 39 yards and three scores of his own. Kenyon Carter was 4-for-7 passing with 82 yards a TD and 19 yards rushing. Tyrone Warren had a 39-yard catch. Chris Washington came up with a 27 reception.

On defense, Ryan Horton led the way with eight tackles and a sack. Alize Johnson had three tackles for a loss. Both Hillary and Jay Lewis-Nixon had three tackles and a pick. Jamal Carter also had an interception.
The Hornets (2-1) have a huge Jefferson District opener with a road trip to a Powhatan (3-0). Orange won the previous meeting between the two.
