Orange County baseball edges William Monroe

Orange County’s baseball team got a huge win out of the gate Tuesday night, edging William Monroe 1-0 with a strong effort by Canon Davies on the mound leading the way.

Davies struck out nine in 6.2 innings and then got a little help from Caleb Fincham who got four outs with just 10 pitches in the top of the seventh and the eighth.

Kyle Johnson — who went 3-for-4 with a couple of bunt singles — singled to centerfield to drive in Hylton Hale for the game-winning run in the bottom of the eighth. Hale was the courtesy runner for Caleb Fincham who reached on a walk to open the eighth.

Reilly Owen was Davies’ equal on the other side for the Dragons, taking over after Alex Kinsey and Derek Ryan combined for three scoreless innings to open the game. Owen struck out 10 in 4.1 innings of work, scattering three hits on the night. He also managed to navigate baserunners after surrendering six walks. The trio combined for 13 strikeouts on the mound.

Jonathan Sexton went 2-for-3 for the Dragons at the plate but Monroe couldn’t scratch across a run, leaving three on base on the night.

Both squads will run it back Thursday for a rematch with first pitch scheduled for six.
