Orange boys drop Madison County with third quarter surge

Orange County’s boys basketball team surged in the third quarter Friday night and then held on down the stretch to beat Madison County 51-45.

 

Orange trailed by two at the break, with Madison up 21-18. The Hornets found a little bit of an offensive groove in the third and led 34-28 going into the fourth.

 

The Hornets leaned on their defense, holding Madison to just 34 percent shooting including just four 3-pointers. Offensively, Sihle Mthethwa led the Hornets with 10 points and three assists while Kyrie Carer scored nine and pulled down seven boards. Jireek Washington was a steady hand distributing, dishing out five assists and turning it over just once while swiping three steals.

 

Brandon Franklin had two blocks and five rebounds off the bench while Chance Williams had five boards.

 

Madison County’s Khalid West led the Mountaineers with 17 points while Elijah Lewis scored 16 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.

 

The Mountaineers will travel to Culpeper Tuesday while Orange travels to take William Monroe.
