Nelson boys earn Dogwood championship game berth

For the first time since the state title squad of 2008, Nelson County’s boys basketball team is inthe Dogwood District title game.

 

The Governors beat Gretna 83-57 in Wednesday’s Dogwood District semifinals after losing twice to the Hawks in the regular season. Now they’ll face Dan River in the district title game Friday at 6 p.m.

 

Nelson steadily pulled away from Gretna, building a 17-10 lead in the first quarter that increased to 39-27 by halftime. Nelson knocked down 10  3-pointers as a team, shooting nearly 42 percent from beyond the arc.

 

Brice Wilson led that explosive Nelson offense, hitting 3 of 4 3-point attempts while also dishing out seven assists and swiping three steals. Houston Carter added 21 points and buried five 3-pointers of his own while posting four rebounds and three steals. Damien Jacques rounded out the bulk of the offense with 10 points and six rebounds. Devon Toms and Jaren Purvis each had eight points and five rebounds while Jamel Rose notched seven points on the night.

 

After the Dogwood title game Friday, the Governors will turn to the Region 2C tournament where they’re the No. 5 seed and play at No. 4 Appomattox Monday.
