Nelson baseball surges late to beat Buckingham County

With the score knotted at 6-6 going into the seventh inning Monday night, Nelson County needed a spark. The Governors got one, reeling off four runs in the top of the seventh.

Then Blayze McGarry stepped on the mound and held Buckingham to just one run to secure a 10-7 victory over the Knights, a big early season victory for Nelson.

Michael Fitzgerald led the Nelson offense with two doubles on a 3-for-3 night with two RBI. McGarry and Walker Willoughby also posted two RBI with Willoughby going 1-for-3 and McGarry going 2-for-4. Landon Thacker scored twice and stole a base for the Governors.

Landen Campbell struck out seven in his five innings on the mound for Nelson and gave up just one earned run. Errors stacked up behind Marshall Garrison but he gave up just a single earned run in his one-inning stint.

The Knights, a program on the rise that rode a ton of young talent to the Region 2B finals last spring in a run that included its first playoff win since the 1990s, had an uncharacteristic error-filled night on defense as six of the Governors’ 10 runs were unearned and Buckingham committed nine total errors. Despite those issues on defense, they were in it late because Allen and Newton each went 3-for-4 with Newton knocking in two runs and posting a pair of doubles.

Nelson will try and keep things rolling Wednesday when the Governors travel to take on Buffalo Gap while Buckingham will try and bounce back Thursday at home against Prince Edward.
