Nelson County baseball went on the road and picked up a solid 6-2 win over Madison County with a big late-inning push.
The Governors trailed 2-0 going into the top of the sixth after the Mountaineers’ Connor Houser singled in a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Nelson responded, with pitcher Jake Ballowe tying the game up with a bases-clearing triple. Then Logan Campbell had an RBI double and Kendreck Brown extended the lead to 5-2 with a single that plated two.
Cameron Banton tacked on another run with a double in the seventh to make it 6-2.
Ballowe finished the day with six strikeouts in seven innings of work on the mound.
The Governors’ late explosion derailed an otherwise impressive outing from Trey Deane, who pitched five-straight scoreless innings, struck out 12 and allowed just three walks and four hits in 5.1 innings.
Houser went 3-for-4 with two RBI. Todd Davis scored once and went 1-for-3 for the Mountaineers.
Madison will travel to take on William Monroe Friday night. Nelson will host Chatham Friday at 5 p.m.
