Monticello volleyball sweeps Charlottesville

Monticello volleyball’s three-headed attack overpowered Charlottesville Tuesday night en route to a 3-0 victory over the Black Knights.

Seniors Allie Perez, Hannah Green and Zimako Chuks led a young Monticello team against a struggling Charlottesville team. The fireworks came early from hard-hitting Green with a monstrous kill to account for the third point of the match. The Mustangs then went on an 11-point streak behind Green’s six aces on the night.

Charlottesville put up a fight late in the set behind Grace Tanner’s powerful service although it was to no avail as the Mustangs clinched the set 25-12.

Monticello continued where it left off in the next set with an ace by Alexandra Blaine followed by a powerful kill by Chuks to put the Mustangs up 3-1. CHS fought back towards the end of the set, coming within two points of Monticello yet ultimately falling 25-19.

The final game of the match went Monticello’s way until a lapse in serving gave the Mustangs a scare, sparking the Black Knights back to just a one-point, 15-14 deficit halfway through the set. Some mistakes by CHS solidified the Mustang victory as they went on to win the last set 25-20.

Perez coordinated the Mustang effort with 25 assists and four aces. Meanwhile Chuks and Green each had eight kills, improving Monticello’s record to 7-6.

The Black Knights (2-13) will face Albemarle at home and Monticello (5-6) will travel to Powhatan on Thursday night.
