Monticello survives late Fluvanna drive

Facing former colleague Brud Bicknell for the first time since becoming the head coach at Fluvanna County, Rodney Redd and the Flyin’ Flucos gave host Monticello just about all it could handle. Just about.

Trailing by five points in the final seconds in the fourth quarter, Fluvanna worked it’s way down to the Mustangs seven yard line, but in the end could not punch in the game winning drive and Monticello picked up a hard fought 14-9 victory.

CJ Page was a one man show for Monticello, particularly in the first half. The senior running back finished with 149 yards on 27 carries. Page scored both Mustangs touchdowns. His first score came on a 49-yard scamper in the first quarter with his team trailing 6-0, and his second came on an 8-yard run in the second frame to put Monticello up by eight. Page has already amassed 508 rushing in the four games he’s played in.

T.J. Dudley scored the lone touchdown for Fluvanna on a 2-yard run early in the first quarter and finished with 74 yards on 18 attempts . The Flucos added a field goal in the final minute of the first half. There was no scoring for either teams in the second half.

This is the eighth year in a row that Monticello has trumped Fluvanna.

Fluvanna (1-4, 0-2 Jefferson) will host William Monroe on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Monticello (2-3, 1-2) will host JD newcomer Goochland on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
