Monticello softball rallies twice to beat Fluvanna

Fighting back once is hard enough, but Monticello softball had to rally twice Thursday night in order to knock off a scrappy Fluvanna County squad 5-4 for a key Jefferson District win.

The Flucos led 3-0 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, with Cassie Kinglsey and Candice Shaheen both knocking in runs. Fluvanna scratched out just five hits with Emily Clifford managing things nicely in the circle for the Mustangs, but the Flucos made the most of those few hits to build that three-run lead.

Clifford struck out eight and walked just one and wasn’t tagged with any earned runs in the contest, and that effort kept the Mustangs in striking distance, opening the door for the late rally.

Makysha Brock got that rally started with a two-run home run to right field in the bottom of the sixth. Then in the ninth spot in the lineup, Kirstena Lilley knocked in Clifford to tie the game up.

Fluvanna managed to bounce back in the top of the seventh, scoring on a Monticello error. Undeterred though, Monticello’s Haley Brown connected on a two-RBI single, bringing in Elizabeth Kenney and Hannah Shifflett to push Monticello ahead 5-4.

For the Mustangs, Shifflett had a big night at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double. Brock was 3-for-3 including the home run. Clifford went 2-for-3 and Nikole Jenkins went 2-for-4.

The Flucos will look to bounce back Monday on the road against Spotswood. The Mustangs have an important clash with Louisa County at home Tuesday.
