Monticello girls lacrosse surges past Rockbridge

Monticello girls lacrosse didn’t waste any time showing that this year’s edition has some fight.

The Mustangs edged out Rockbridge 12-11 in overtime in the squad’s wild season opener, rallying from down 11-8 with 1:05 left to storm back for the victory.

Meghan Walin scored with 1:03 left in overtime to get the Mustangs over the hump, but not without a lot of help as Sarah Frances Krebs made two of her 11 saves on the night in overtime before Walin broke through.

Walin finished with four goals and an assist in the game that featured five different ties, including being deadlocked at 6-6 at the half, as both teams battled for control.

Walin finished with four goals and an assist while Caleigh Smith had three goals and two assists. Freshman Alison Swartout scored four goals in her varsity debut, including two straight goals to jumpstart the late Mustangs rally. Walin then scored the final two goals.

Taylar Hackney notched two assists, feeding Swartout on her fourth goal. Alexis Stadler rounded out the offensive effort with one goal.

Monticello will travel to Richmond to play Mills Godwin Friday night at 7:30 p.m..
