Monticello girls lacrosse pulls away from Charlottesville

For the first ten minutes and change, it appeared as though the Monticello and Charlottesville girls lacrosse teams were locked in a dog fight. But thanks to a long run between the end of the first half and deep into the second, the Mustangs pulled away to win comfortably, 19-4.

“We were a little slow to start on offense, getting shots just not the ones we wanted,” said Monticello coach Trent Holden. “But we picked up. The draw still isn’t our friend and we’ll keep working on that but I thought the defense really picked it up and created some turnovers, got us off to a lot of fast breaks.”

Paige McGlothlin got Monticello off to a 1-0 to open up the first half, but Charlottesville answered with one of three goals from Chloe Boutin to even things up. And back-and-forth it went with the Mustangs going up 2-1 but the Black Knights keeping things close at 3-2.

“We played well against Fluvanna earlier and I thought we came out tonight with a fire,” said Charlottesville coach Elyse Fisher. “That sparked some momentum for this game but then after a bit I think we just got our heads down a bit too much.”

But the last fifteen minutes of the first half saw Monticello find a groove. With nine unanswered goals, the Mustangs went into the break up 12-2.

“Coach pulled us in and told us that we needed to sharpen up our skills a little bit,” McGlothlin said. “We were able to bring it back together.”

And with a dominant ground ball game continuing to add to their possession totals, Monticello was able to coast to the win with Charlottesville adding its last two goals late in the game.

“We’re a fast team with some really fast midfielders so we encourage the girls to really get after the ground balls rather than sitting back,” Holden said. “We want them to be aggressive and there are certain times to be that. I thought we did a good job of getting after the 50-50 balls particularly as the game went along.”

McGlothlin led the Mustangs with five goals to go with three ground balls. Ari Archer put in four goals. Caleigh Smith had three goals and an assist. Kendall Walin had a goal and an assist. Carly Harris finished with five saves in net.

For the Black Knights, Boutin finished with three goals and two assists. O’Brien finished with two goals.
